Ceramics Without the Wheel
Unit Plan
This unit was taught at the ARCC on November 9, November 16, November 23, November 30, and December 7.
This unit consisted of the introduction of clay and the clay terms needed to complete the projects. The students made clay tiles, coil pots, and slab bowls.
Lesson 1: Creating Clay Tiles
This lesson consisted of the student creating a clay tile. They got a demonstration on rolling out slabs and were assigned to use their name or initials in the design of the tiles. This was used as an introduction to the class as well.

Lesson 2: Coil Pots
During the coil pot lesson the history of the coil pot was taught along with different techniques associated with making coil pots. The students rolled out their own coils and could make their coil pots as big or small as they wanted, they were instructed to pay attention to how much time they had, however.

Lesson 3: Slab Bowls
During the slab bowl lesson the students made slabs of their own and created a bowl with their own unique designs.

Lesson 4: Glazing
During this lesson the students glazed their clay tiles. This was good practice for the students in testing out the glazes and how to apply them. The students were instructed to apply three coats of glaze for each section they glazed.

For this lesson the students could finish glazing the rest of their pieces, the coil pot and slab bowl.
